LEADership TRUST programs are designed to combine interesting intellectually rigorous experiences with opportunities to engage with a network of business and community leaders.

October 2017 – The New SeaWorld: An Adaptive LEADership Discussion led by Marilyn Hannes (17), SeaWorld San Diego Park President – TRUST members took part in an adaptive leadership discussion and learned how SeaWorld is changing. The program provided tips on adaptability and the opportunity to learn how to thrive during times of extreme change. Members also enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of SeaWorld’s Animal Care Center and interactions with orcas and dolphins.

July 2017 – “Navy Mayor” Rear Admiral Yancy B. Lindsey – TRUST members and their guests enjoyed a hosted mid-summer evening reception at the Commanding Officer of Navy Region Southwest’s lovely residence on Naval Air Station North Island.

July 2017 – San Diego Convention Center – TRUST members learned about the Convention Center’s contributions to our regional economy from Clifford “Rip” Rippetoe, President and CEO, and Mohsen Khaleghi (17), Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer. Attendees also had the opportunity to have sneak peek preview of Comic-Con 2017.

April 2017 – California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) – Calit2 is taking ideas beyond theory into practice, accelerating innovation and shortening the time to product development and job creation, including development and deployment of prototype infrastructure for testing new solutions in a real-world context. TRUST members met and heard from Larry Smarr, founding Director of Calit2, who also holds the Harry E. Gruber professorship in Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego’s Jacobs School. In addition, TRUST members enjoyed facilitated tours, interactive demonstrations and a reception at Calit2.

November 2016 – It’s All About the People: Helping People Win at Work – A leadership-oriented “fireside chat” featuring WD-40 Company President, CEO and Director (and LEAD board member) Garry Ridge (16) with Servant Leadership Guru Ken Blanchard. Based on the tenets outlined in their book, Helping People Win at Work, Garry and Ken will discuss how using the techniques of “partnering for performance” with employees helps achieve levels of engagement and commitment that fortify the bottom line.

August 2016 – Leaders in Our Region’s Security and Terrorism Protection – What is the San Diego Law Enforcement Coordination Center (SD-LECC)? How does SD-LECC partner with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security? With the recent heightened awareness of potential terrorism activity, how has the SD-LECC been involved in supporting local first responders as they support major law enforcement operations, wild land fire planning, and public safety enhancement during major events such as 4th of July, ComicCon, the MLB All Star Game and the LGBT Pride Parade? Attendees will hear from Sheriff Bill Gore, SD-LECC Director Leslie Gardner, Commander Dave Myers and Lieutenant Roy W. Frank.

May 2016 – Saving Lives Today; Improving Life Tomorrow – LEADership TRUST members learned how San Diego Blood Bank is not only a provider of quality blood services, but is also working with community partners on a pilot program that is precision medicine in action. TRUST members experienced first-hand how the Blood Bank is actively at the forefront of a movement to improve health everywhere. Members toured the lab and a bloodmobile and heard from CEO David Wellis, Ph.D., (15), and Vice President of Cell Biology & Therapy, Robert J. Tressler, Ph.D., M.S.

January 2016 – The Business of Show Business: Inside One of America’s Top 10 Regional Theatres – LEADership TRUST members were greeted by sponsor California Bank & Trust President Eric Ellingsen and learned about the business of show business from fellow TRUST member Randy Clark (11), a trustee of La Jolla Playhouse and Vice President, Human Resources, Diversity & Inclusion for SDG&E and Michael Rosenberg (11) Playhouse Managing Director. After a behind-the-scenes tour of the Playhouse, known for innovation and for producing the “new and next,” TRUST members enjoyed a conversation with Jaime Castañeda, Playhouse Associate Artistic Director and director of the dark comedy, The Guards at the Taj.

October 2015 – The Lore Behind the Roar: The San Diego Zoo Celebrates its Centennial and Looks Toward the Next Hundred Years – After hearing the roar of a lion from exotic animal exhibitions abandoned after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth said, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have  a zoo in San Diego? I believe I’ll build one.” TRUST members learned how the San Diego Zoo got started; got the inside scoop on plans to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2016; and heard about the Zoo’s focus for the next 100 years.

June 2015 – Deep Ocean Discovery: Using Advanced Engineering and Technology Tools to Discover Mysterious Realms – TRUST members enjoyed presentations by scientists at the Birch Aquarium and were treated to hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine while they enjoyed a Green Flash Series Concert from the Birch’s VIP Director’s Deck.

May 2015 – The Science Behind Tomorrow’s Medical Cures – TRUST members met with Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute’s new CEO, Perry Nisen, M.D., Ph.D., and enjoyed behind-the-scenes tours of the Stem Cell Research Center and the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics.

February 2015 – Northrop Grumman’s Unmanned Systems Center of Excellence – TRUST members heard from James M. “Jim” Zortman, Sector Vice President, Global Logistics & Operational Support for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems and learned what goes into the research, development and manufacturing of unmanned systems for sea, land, air and space while surrounded by prototypes, simulators and more.

December 2014 – What is San Diego’s Blue Tech Cluster, and Why is it Important? – Members learned that San Diego is the largest concentrated Blue Tech cluster in the U.S.; heard from Michael Jones, President of The Maritime Alliance and TMA Foundation; and toured the Liberty Station facility of Seabotix, a world-leading manufacturer of an innovative and diverse suite of underwater observation class Mini ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).

October 2014 – Two Countries, One Region, Unlimited Opportunities – TRUST members were transported to Tijuana where they enjoyed a gourmet BajaMed lunch with Valle de Guadalupe wines at the acclaimed restaurant Misión 19, then visited the biennial Tijuana Innovadora conference, where they heard a speech on the future of immigration by former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

May 2014 – Update: The Business of the San Diego Chargers – Members heard from Mark Fabiani, who joined the San Diego Chargers in 2002 as special counsel to Chairman of the Board and President Dean Spanos to work with the greater San Diego community to explore opportunities for a new football stadium in the region. The program was held at Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers have played since it was built in 1967.

January 2014 – A Roundtable with UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla – TRUST members learned about Chancellor Khosla’s goals for UC San Diego to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university, and about the importance of ensuring access and affordability for all qualified students.

December 2013 – SDG&E’s Mission Control Center – Members enjoyed a rare opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour of the high-security hub of SDG&E’s electric systems, providing service to more than a million customers.

October 2013 – The Business of San Diego’s Sports & Active Lifestyle – TRUST members participated in a discussion about this up-and-coming industry with representatives from San Diego Sport Innovators, SKLZ, Hydroflex Technology and VAVi Sports & Social Club, followed by a tour of the SKLZ facility with demonstrations of the company’s products.

July 2013 – The Secret of Brilliant Leadership – Members were treated to an enlightening overview of the differences between creativity and innovation and a discussion about how brilliant leaders leverage those differences, facilitated by AmyK Hutchens (13), CEO, speaker, trainer and business strategist.
